Pissin' off Gangs Now [Sep. 23rd, 2011|07:08 pm]
Stephen
[Current Mood |amusedamused]

This week saw some dramatic crime here in Lawton. A couple soldiers broke into some local's home, tied them up, and shot a couple. Crazy, eh? Now I've learned the victims have gang ties. The gang's put out a threat that if any of their people die (which is very possible) war will be declared.

My first response is, "Can we return the favor?" The idea of some hoods threatening drive-bys while we practice precision artillary strikes on crackhouses amuses me.

Anyway. We've been warned on a battalion level. A chunk of the town has been labeled Off Limits. Post commander hasn't put out any direction yet. We'll see how that goes.

Whoo, got the nasal spray flu vaccine today. Damn I hate that method. Give me a needle over a spritzer anyday. Bets on how sick I get from the thing?

I have returned from a week in the field. 75th FiB had its annual summer exercise. It was what you'd expect an Army FYX to be: long and dirty.
We jumped locations three times, including once in the dark to practice night driving with NVGs.

That was an experience. The goggles give you tunnel vision. Imagine driving with your field of view only as wide as half your hood. Almost hit a couple deer that bounded in front of my truck.

Of course the biggest inconvenience is the lack of running water. Personal hygiene is limited to baby wipe rub downs. You know you're filthy when your razor scrapes more dirt off your face than hair.

All complaining aside, the weather was surprisingly forgiving. Only a couple days approached triple digits. A good portion of the week was in the 80s. Skies were clear of rain, so I enjoyed sleeping under the stars identifying constellations.

Tonight the post theater is showing Captain America. I've already seen it twice, but it's worth seeing a third time for a dollar.

Pug and Odette, you said you'd be in FL briefly for Christmas. Have dates in mind?

I think I'll spend some of the Christmas holiday in Ft. Walton. Who thinks they'll be around there then?

Of the five senses (sight, sound, touch, smell and taste), which would you willing to give up, and why?

Taste. I just want my food to be filling. Taste just isn't that important to me.

Driving [Aug. 27th, 2011|08:05 pm]

I drive aimlessly when I want to relax. Today, for example, I drove nearly 200 miles along random roads here in Oklahoma. I've visited towns too small for a single streetlight, historical markers, county museums and no-name bars. I've noticed something: the two most common places of business are banks and salons. How do four female hair places stay open within a square mile of eachother when the town they're in is too small for a single streetlight?

Another Restart [Aug. 26th, 2011|04:29 pm]

Another huge break in posts because of laziness. And another (most likely) short-lived attempt to post up here regularly.

I am currently on funeral detail. From the 29th - 4th, I'm on call to perform military funerals for the area. Ft. Sill is responsible for Oklahoma, northern Texas, and Arkansas. So, for that week I could be traveling to anywhere in that region to carry the casket, fire volleys and fold the flag for some veteran who's died.

Today went before the Soldier of the Month board. Think of it as an oral exam by a group of first sergeants where they can ask questions on Army history, law, policies, training, etc. Though correct answers aren't everything the first sergeants are looking for. To determine a winner PT score, marksmanship, appearance, military bearing and confidence are factored in. Unfortunately I didn't win this time. There's next month, though, and, really, the experience is worth far more than the prize in my eyes. When promotion time rolls around I'll be put through this same process to earn my chevrons. THe practice and face time is welcome.

Currently reading the fifth Game of Thrones book. When that's finished I intend to try Hunger Games.

Gonna be in Syracuse mid-October for a college buddy's wedding. I'm best man. Already had the bachelor party. After that I'm hoping my next vacation will be in Florida. My oldest brother John just got assigned to Hurlburt AFB. Gotta love free lodging in vacation zones.
